Wuthering Heights

WUTHERING HEIGHTS (3F, 2M + piano & optional cello)

Libretto by Vanessa LeBourdais & Ian Gschwind
Music by Vanessa LeBourdais

Our current project: A new musical adaptation of Emily Brontë's classic gothic tale of ghosts, romance, and revenge. Listen to some brand-new songs, below!

This is our first adaptation and it's exciting to work on a script where we don't have to figure out for ourselves what happens! I'm also discovering that embodying the vengeful, powerful Heathcliff as I write music for him makes me grumpy. :-)

Take a sneak listen to some music from Wuthering Heights:

All three songs are sung by me - yes, that's right, I get to sing a love duet with myself. (I've secretly always wanted to play all the parts in a musical, and this way I get to). Music & lyrics all subject to change.

"I Will Be There" - Heathcliff & Catherine

In the graveyard, during the first scene with CATHERINE and HEATHCLIFF. THEY have been talking about ghosts, life and their love. HEATHCLIFF makes them swear their love.

"Alone Without Your Love" - Heathcliff & Catherine

CATHERINE and HEATHCLIFF are writing letters to each other. CATHERINE has injured herself while at the neighbour's house, Thrushcross Grange, and has stayed there to recuperate. During the song, we see various short silent scenes between the characters: her brother HINDLEY interfering with the transfer of the letters; the housekeeper NELLY reluctantly telling both Catherine and Heathcliff that the other has sent no word; ISABELLA - the neighbour - shaking her head to Catherine, telling her that Heathcliff hasn't come.

"Now I Play It Gentle" - Heathcliff

HEATHCLIFF has returned wealthy from his absence of three years, and has paid off Hindley’s gambling debts, thereby becoming the new owner of Wuthering Heights. He has just left Thrushcross Grange after seeing Catherine for the first time. She is now married to Edgar. Heathcliff has learned that Edgar’s sister, Isabella, wants him.
